Brooklyn Center Appoints Daren Nyquist as Interim City Manager

The Brooklyn Center City Council has appointed Daren Nyquist as the interim city manager, following the departure of former City Manager Reggie Edwards. Nyquist, who previously served as the city’s deputy city manager, steps into this role during a period of transition for the city.

Edwards, who had been city manager since 2021, was relieved of his duties in a 3-2 council vote on December 19. The decision was met with public protest, as Edwards was the only Black city manager serving in Minnesota at the time. In his parting remarks, Edwards highlighted the city’s progress and expressed concern over potential setbacks due to divisiveness.

Nyquist brings a strong background in public administration to his new role. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Carleton College and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining Brooklyn Center, Nyquist served in an administrative role for Dakota County.

The city council approved Nyquist’s appointment without discussion during their January 12 meeting, indicating a consensus on his capability to lead the city during this interim period. As Brooklyn Center continues to navigate this leadership change, residents and city officials alike are looking to Nyquist to maintain stability and continue the city’s progress.
